Karl leads a quiet life—quieter than he wants, especially since getting into a fight with one of the most powerful men in the city—but it could be worse. In a city where super heroes and villains can level a city block in a moment, it's a good day when nothing is destroyed, especially for the man who sells super hero insurance.

After yet another date stands him up, Karl heads home for another night spent reading with only his cats for company. But a strange sound at the bus stop leads him to a shocking discovery Trick of the Light, a notorious villain in possession of an impossible power, and currently the intense focus of a man hunt by the Grand Order of Defenders.

But Karl has never had much respect for the Order and its arrogant, cavalier super heroes. Whatever the risks, he'd much rather spend the night helping a villain, especially since once Trick is well enough to move Karl will probably never see him again…

I was intrigued over the whole concept. I love anti-heroes, I love villains. "Heroes" are typically too goodie-goodie for me and I've always been one of those people who look at the super heroes with "But, like, did you see all the damage you just caused?" So, yeah, needless to say, this sounded right up my alley. And I wasn't disappointed.

I enjoyed the character of Karl (who is our POV into this world). I also enjoyed Trick and Turncoat. I totally called who their true identities were, but did it take away from the story? Not one bit. I was surprised by the identity of someone else, so that was a nice twist I didn't see coming.

Trick and Karl's relationship was nicely done. There was a lot of intrigue but also real feelings that blossomed. The sex was what I would consider low heat, which is just fine by me, and it felt like it belonged (nothing worse, to me, than a bunch of needless sex).

I thought the world was fleshed out enough to understand the basics, while leaving it open to expand it in future installments. I'm not sure if this is a spin-off from something (it felt like it at times?), but I never felt lost in this world. Derr just plops you down into the middle of everything and yet I didn't get the sense that I was missing anything important.

The ending - OMG, the ending! - was so great. I would really love to read more about Trick and Karl and their adventures going forward. I see the next book is focused on Turncoat, though I suspect given how things ended that we'll see Trick and Karl too. So, there's that to look forward to. Overall, this book was a fun read that was packed with an intriguing relationship, thoughtful social questions, an interesting world, humor, friendship... yeah, I'm quite happy now.

It makes me think what they think, superheroes are not that fun. But still, they are fun.
This was fun! Ms Deer is very good at making you like her hero's . I am waiting for more world building . So does love trump evil?? We are going g to find .
Add this to the now long list of stories I've enjoyed by this author. It was a smidge darker than I'd expected, but it definitely kept my interest and I'm looking forward to the next story. Reminded me a little of The Incredibles, only in that "heroes" and villains were commonplace in this -verse. Liked the name of the newest "villain," too. Clever, as always, MD.
This Was Awesome! Often I find myself wondering about the flipside of characters. Particularly those that are good. If an organization states it is purely for the good of the people I get suspicious. This book takes a vaguely Robin Hood approach to villains and it works well. My main gripe is this is too short.
What can I say? I enjoy reading her stories! She has an imaginative and creative mind and a direct, matter-of-fact style that I just like a lot. This one employs that creative talent, and ends up like a super hero book taking place in the very distant future. Her books are timeless, full of adventure, and have endless appeal.
I love the concept behind this! I was a huge fan of City of Heroes/City of Villains when that MMORPG was around, and one of my villains had a very similar backstory to this.

Derr poses the question what if all of the heroes weren't so heroic? Her answer is excellent, and I won't go into details so as not to spoil things for the reader. Do yourself a favor and read this. You may never view the Avengers, Superman, X-Men, etc. the same way.

After all, isn't it just good press that makes us view them as heroes rather than villains?
Trick of the Light was a really great book to start off this series. I love the whole Anti Hero thing Megan Derr has going. How she explains the creation of them somewhat. How the heroes aren't really the heroes. Karl, an insurance salesman, finding his excitement when he rescues a super villain only to discover so much more about himself.
This isn't a long story. It's a novella for sure. But Megan is able to get so much in that you don't feel like you missed anything. I look forward to reading more of this series!
